DIY Habitat
Transformation Guide

A complete, step-by-step guide to transforming your Eastern Pennsylvania property into a thriving native bird habitat โ€” written for homeowners of all experience levels, entirely free.

"Begin small and have a plan. This can be a hobby. You don't have to do it all at once." โ€” Doug Tallamy
Before removing anything or purchasing plants, spend time observing your property across different times of day and different seasons. Note where sunlight falls in the morning versus afternoon. Identify areas of standing water after rain, which indicate poor drainage. Mark zones of deep shade under mature trees versus open sunny patches. Walk your property with a notebook and sketch a rough map. Note existing trees and shrubs โ€” some may already be native and worth keeping. Identify any invasive species (see Step 02). Observe which areas birds currently use for perching, foraging, or shelter. This assessment phase is not about rushing to change things. It's about developing an intimate understanding of your land's character โ€” its microclimates, its soil types, its existing wildlife activity. A good habitat design works with the land, not against it.

Practical Tips

  • Visit your yard at dawn to observe which birds are already present
  • Note which existing plants produce berries, seeds, or attract insects
  • Photograph problem areas โ€” compacted soil, erosion, standing water
  • Check your soil pH โ€” most native plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral (6.0โ€“7.0)
Resource: Audubon's native plant database (audubon.org/plantsforbirds) can help you identify what's already growing.
