Not all wood is created equal. When we design native habitat elements for your garden, we build them to last — and the material we trust most is Accoya.
When Bob Barrett designs a custom planter, a nest box post, a garden bench, or a habitat structure for your property, the material question matters as much as the design itself. A native habitat garden is a living system — it should last decades, not seasons. That's why Wild Bird DesignScapes builds with Accoya.
What Is Accoya?
Accoya is not a species of tree. It begins as Pinus radiata — a fast-growing, sustainably managed pine — and is transformed through a process called acetylation. During acetylation, the wood's cell walls are modified using acetic acid, the same compound found in vinegar, to dramatically reduce the wood's ability to absorb moisture. The result is a material that is dimensionally stable, rot-resistant, and extraordinarily durable — without the use of any toxic preservatives.
Every piece of Accoya is modified through to its core. Whether it is cut, shaped, drilled, or planed, the performance is consistent throughout. There are no soft spots, no untreated interior layers, no compromise.
Why It Matters for Habitat Gardens
A native habitat garden is not a decoration. It is a working ecosystem — one that will be exposed to rain, frost, soil contact, and decades of seasonal change. The structures we place in that garden need to hold up without leaching chemicals into the soil, without warping around a nest box entry hole, and without requiring replacement every five years.
Accoya is Class 1 durable — the highest classification for wood durability — and it surpasses even old-growth tropical hardwoods like teak in performance. It carries a 50-year above-ground warranty and a 25-year in-ground warranty. It is Cradle to Cradle Gold Certified, meaning it contains nothing that is not already naturally present in wood. Insects and fungi do not recognize it as a food source. It does not off-gas. It does not harm the soil biology you are working so hard to restore.
For a practice built on ecological integrity, Accoya is the only choice that makes sense.
Custom-Designed Accoya Garden Elements
Wild Bird DesignScapes offers a growing line of custom-designed Accoya wood garden elements — handcrafted in collaboration with The Wood Shop in Malvern, PA. Each piece is designed by Bob with the native habitat garden in mind: proportions that complement naturalistic planting, finishes that weather gracefully, and construction that will outlast the garden itself.
Current and upcoming elements include custom planters, nest box mounting systems, habitat benches, and bespoke garden structures designed for specific site conditions.
If you are interested in commissioning a custom Accoya element for your property, reach out through the contact page. We are happy to discuss your site, your vision, and what is possible.
The best garden structures are the ones you stop noticing — because they belong there. Accoya makes that possible.
